IMF will not give anymore money to Ukraine?
Scroooge Wed, 2009-09-09 09:55”I think the IMF will not give us any more, until the end of the year,” said Oleksandr Shlapak, deputy head of Victor Yushchenko’s presidential administration. “We are not fulfilling our obligations – practically none of them,” Mr Shlapak said pointing to shortcomings by the government of Yulia Tymoshenko, prime minister and a bitter presidential opponent. Mr Shlapak’s comments come amid an IMF mission to one of the economies hit hardest by recession to discuss further co-operation. Energizer Tue, 2009-02-03 15:01According to a review of Ukraine's current International Monetary Fund (IMF) stand-by arrangement, the Fund has criticised Ukraine's authorities for the delayed floatation of the hryvnia, which had been, in contrast to the agreement of the IMF-sponsored reform package, re-pegged at first during November 2008 and only later floated as the central bank interventions turned out to be too costly. The document, which was prepared on 11 December but published only at the end of last week, also notes that progress in banking sector restructuring has been made albeit slowly, and reiterates commitments to fiscal targets, namely a balanced budget in 2009. It explicitly condemns Ukrainian plans to ... [ Read more ]

Naftogaz faces technical default on its US$500mn eurobond
Карло Марло Sun, 2008-11-16 20:51On October 28 Ukraine’s state owned energy firm Naftogaz failed in their efforts to get bondholders to waive publication of the firm’s 2007 financial results until the end of the year. As a result, it is feared the firm may go into a technical default on its US$500mn eurobond, which may force it to pay out a total of US$2.5bn in payments due to clauses in other debt agreements. Should Naftogaz default, this would pose severe risks to the ustainability of Ukraine’s external debt burden, particularly as approximately US$2.4bn of the firm’s liabilities are guaranteed by the government.
